Finding an Address for Your Company in Brazil

Ever hear the stories about where Apple, Microsoft, Google, Amazon and HP all got started? Like so many other big companies, each started in a garage. Well, not in Brazil at least. Finding a location for your company can be a challenge because not every address can be used for all business activities.

Before registering your company with the trade board, it’s necessary to run a search - Pesquisa de Viabilidade. The results will tell you if the company’s activities are permitted at the proposed address. After all, not everyone wants a noisy business as their neighbor.

In some cities, such as São Paulo, the search is completed through an online system known as REDESIM. You’ll be required to enter the business address (including unit number and ZIP code) and size (in square meters) of the property. You’ll also need to know the real property tax number (IPTU).

But even if the Pesquisa de Viabilidade comes back clean, it doesn’t mean you’re completely in the clear. For example, companies that sell goods have special office location requirements. In this case, a dedicated office space with a “fiscal” address is required. Service providers have it a bit easier.

Finding an address should definitely be at the top of your company formation checklist. It’s one of the first questions we ask clients when they decide to start a company in Brazil. Ultimately, you’ll need a business address to get started. The good news is that you can always change it later on.
